So yesterday the Make Me Read It Readathon (Hosted @ The Innocent Smiley) came to a close, and I have to say, it was so much fun! This is the first readathon I have ever participated in, and I managed to read 4 novels. The novels I read were chosen by you, and you did not steer me wrong.
The books I read were:
Cinder - Marissa Meyer
Eleanor & Park - Rainbow Rowell
Anna and the French Kiss - Stephanie Perkins
Throne of Glass - Sarah J Maas

Book 1: Cinder by Marissa Meyer So this was a fantastic start to the readathon. I binged this from the Monday morning until Tuesday afternoon, I even got the audiobook so that I wouldn't waste time when driving to and from university. I loved this book. I just found it so enjoyable, the world was so easy to slip into, and I didn't feel like I had read anything like it before. The diversity evident in the characters was so refreshing and wonderful to read, and all the characters were developed well. I was actually pretty bummed I had committed to other books and couldn't jump straight in to Scarlett. Rating: 4.5 stars |
Book 2: Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell I kind of had a love/hate relationship with this one. I found Rowell's writing really beautiful, and Eleanor's story made my heart ache, it was so tragic and sad. But I just did not believe the authenticity of the relationship between Eleanor & Park. It really came out of nowhere, one minute they are awkward hand holding friends, nek minit Eleanor thinks she "kind of live(s)" for Park. Admittedly though, their relationship was sweet. Just not realistic or relatable for me. This novel has made me want to pick up some more of Rowell's work. Rating: 3 stars. |
Book 3: Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins This one really snuck up on me. I am not a huge contemporary romance fan, but the reviews and gushing over this novel made me want to give it a go. I spent the entire first half of the novel rolling my eyes, and I really didn't like Anna. She was spoilt, rude and boy could she whinge! She was in Paris for goodness sake! But, despite my initial reluctance to engage in any of 'the feels' of this book ... what can I say? Perkins, you won me over. Anna truly develops as a character, and by the end I was all gooey and happy. It was a very pleasant surprise. Rating: 4 stars. |
Book 4: Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas This was a great book to wrap up the readathon with. I adored Celaena. She was arrogant, vain, snarky, sulky ... and I loved it! I do wish we got to hear more about her back story, but I know that it will all come to light eventually. I didn't find the actual plot of this novel entirely new - at times it felt predictable and a bit tame, but overall it was an enjoyable read. I am definitely looking forward to reading Crown of Midnight, I think now that the world building and introduction has taken place we will hopefully get to flesh out a bit more of a hectic story alongside Celaena. Bring it on. Rating: 3.75 stars. Is that a thing? |
Overall the readathon was a really enjoyable experience. I enjoyed sharing progress and freaking out with all the other participants over on twitter. Thank you to everyone who voted!
