Thursday Quotables is a weekly meme hosted @ Bookshelf Fantasies. Basically, each week you highlight a noteworthy line or passage from the text you are currently reading. This week, I've decided to go for a passage very early on in Naomi Novik's Uprooted. I absolutely love the snark here: it was what made me rush out and order a copy after reading only a few paragraphs of the excerpt.
Our Dragon doesn’t eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley. We hear them sometimes, from travelers passing through. They talk as though we were doing human sacrifice, and he were a real dragon. Of course that’s not true: he may be a wizard and immortal, but he’s still a man, and our fathers would band together and kill him if he wanted to eat one of us every ten years. He protects us against the Wood, and we’re grateful, but not that grateful.
If you haven't heard of this novel yet I challenge you to go read the excerpt here. I'm pretty confident you'll love it.
